Percy Sledge and Sunset Drive

Percy Sledge will forever be associated with When a Man Loves a Woman, a pleading, soulful ballad he sang with wrenching, convincing anguish and passion. It was quickly followed by two Top Ten R&B hits, Warm and Tender Love and It Tears Me Up. Sledge sang all of his songs this way and it was a voice that made him one of the key figures of deep Southern soul during the late 1960s. Percy’s popularity was revived in the late 1980s when “…Man Loves a Woman” began appearing in movie soundtracks and television commercials, including a Levi commercial in the UK. The hit single was re-released in 1987 and climbed to number two. Not only did he receive a Career Achievement award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, he also revived his touring career. Percy released a new album in 1994, Blue Night, to uniformly positive reviews. Round out a perfectly magical evening with “The Golden Voice of Soul” as he appears with his backup band, Sunset Drive, complete with rhythm section, sax and trumpet.
