Technical TheatreThe technical theatre concentration focuses on stagecraft, lighting and sound for live performance. Students have the unique opportunity at the Performing Arts Center to work backstage on the 75-plus touring events that frequent the PAC. Students work side by side with touring artists and professional technicians to see how it is really done. Students have worked on national touring musicals that include, Rent, Stomp, Lord of the Dance, Hairspray, and Seussical the Musical, and on concert events that include Brad Paisley, Willie Nelson, Linda Eder, and Mandy Patinkin. They have even assembled ice rinks on the Kuss Auditorium stage, and worked with legends like BB King and Bill Cosby. Students who enroll in this program will be prepared as a well-rounded theatre technician for any entry-level technical theatre career at the end of two years of full-time study. Some students may choose to transfer to university programs to study a specific technical focus or design field. Opportunities for technical internships exist in many different areas including business/corporate theatre, the opera, the ballet, outdoor drama, rural theatre, traditional theatre and theme parks. Graduates of this program have worked for a variety of companies, ranging from production stage manager of the Human Race Theatre Company in Dayton to projectionist for the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Utah.
